Desk research

Before you ask anyone anything, some of the answer is already published. Desk research sweeps an idea's problem space and writes it up with the sources attached.

It runs in two places: on a card in a field, under its Research tab, and on a study, under Secondary. Same brief, same sources; one is about an idea you're exploring, the other is the background to a question you're fielding.

Two depths

Quick scanone pass

A fast read of the space. Use it to find out whether an idea is worth more of your attention.

Go deepthree passes

Three sourced passes — the market, the evidence, and what's shifting — for about three times the inference credit. Use it when you're going to act on what it says.

What comes back

A written brief, not a list of links: the state of play in prose, marked with which depth produced it and how many sources it drew on. Underneath, every source is a link you can open and check.

Check them. The brief is a starting position, and a claim you're going to repeat in a meeting deserves a look at where it came from.

Running research again replaces the brief with a fresh one, which is what you want when a space has moved.
