Workbench and n8n

Workbench or n8n?

n8n connects your apps and runs the workflows between them, with AI as one kind of step. Workbench is where your team designs the AI step itself, tests it with the people who know the work, and ships a version your product can count on.

In n8n

Claim triage

Workflow · Active · 9 nodes

Gmail Trigger, then AI Agent, then Switch, then Slack.

AI Agent: classify the claim as self_serve, ship_part, engineer_visit or needs_more.

In Workbench

Claim triage

  • Sorts each claim four waysLive
  • Tried on 40 recent claims92%
  • Claims lead reacted by link3 changes kept
  • Called from the claims inboxPinned version

Every run shows each step and what it cost

Where the two part ways.

  1. 1

The AI step gets its own editor

Workbench opens an agent, a classifier, a judge or a structured extractor in an editor built for that job, with the instructions, the model and real examples side by side. In n8n the AI Agent is one node in a larger workflow.

  2. 2

The people who know the work shape it

Send a claims lead or a nurse a link to the draft, and their thumbs and comments become edits. Each edit reruns your tests and is undone if the score drops.

  3. 3

Tests that travel with every version

Caliper keeps your datasets, rubrics and reviewers, tests each version, and shows the score when you publish. n8n has evaluations too, which you wire into the workflow with an evaluation trigger and a dataset.

  4. 4

    Processes that take days

Write a Task as a sentence, and Workbench turns it into steps, asks named people to approve or edit, escalates when they don't answer, and records the outcome in Ledger. Each run shows which step it's on and who it's waiting for.

  5. 5

Part of the rest of your workspace

Compass drafts a first flow from a change on its map, Zero builds and runs flows with you, and Napkin pages run a flow from a button. Every flow is also reachable over MCP.

When Workbench is the right choice

  • The hard part of the job is the AI's judgment, and you need it right.
  • The people who know the work aren't the people who build it.
  • Your product needs a pinned version that edits can't break.
  • The process runs for days and needs named people to sign off.

Job by job

Building the AI step

n8n: An AI Agent node with a prompt, a model and tool nodes attached.

Workbench: An editor for each kind of job, with examples to try beside it.

Feedback from experts

n8n: Gathered by the builder, outside the workflow.

Workbench: Experts chat with the draft by link, and their reactions become edits.

Testing

n8n: Evaluations that run a dataset through the workflow and record metrics.

Workbench: Caliper tests every version, and the score shows when you publish.

Starting a run

n8n: Triggers on app events, webhooks, schedules, chat and forms.

Workbench: The API, a webhook link, a schedule, Slack, text, or a Napkin button.

Work with people in it

n8n: Approval steps that pause a workflow until someone answers.

Workbench: Tasks with named approvers, escalation, and a record in Ledger.

Other apps

n8n: Hundreds of built-in integrations, plus MCP.

Workbench: Any MCP server your workspace connects, plus HTTP requests.

Let n8n move the data, and let Workbench make the call.

Many teams keep n8n for the plumbing between apps and put the judgment in a Workbench flow that experts have shaped and Caliper has tested.

  • Call a published flow from an n8n HTTP Request node with an API key, pinned to a version.
  • Or post JSON to the flow's webhook link, which runs the latest published version and can be revoked at any time.
  • The API returns each answer with its cost, and every run lands in the flow's history.

Questions

Can n8n call a Workbench flow?
Yes. Use the API with a key, or the webhook link from the flow's Share menu.
Can a flow start when something happens in another app?
Have that app, or n8n, call the flow's API or webhook link. A Task can also start when a record is added or changed in a Napkin table.
